Pearl Buying Guide

At Smales Jewellers we have a range of pearl Jewellery to choose from. From lustrous bracelets to one-of-a-kind earrings. At Smales we understand that a pearl is a precious and highly personal piece of jewellery, often with significant sentimental value. Understanding the virtues of a pearl means valuing their individuality.

SHAPE – South Sea Pearls are shaped by nature and are found in a variety of different shapes. This means that these pearls can be used in a diverse range of jewellery designs to suit differing tastes and personality.

SIZE – South Sea Pearls generally range in size from 8 to 18mm, with some exceptional pieces even growing over 20mm. The most striking feature of a pearl is usually its size, and the bigger the pearl the larger the price.

COLOUR – The colour of a pearl is a personal choice. South Sea pearls range in colour from white and silver, through to cream, yellow, gold, and black.

COMPLEXION – The complexion or skin of the pearl can vary from a clean flawless ‘A grade’ pearl, through to a ‘C grade’ pearl, which may have obvious spots or pits around a large part of the surface area.

LUSTRE- A gentle sheen or a soft glow – Lustre refers to the inner glow or shine of the pearl. A pearl with high lustre has both a beautifully reflective surface and a luminous depth, such that it appears to glow. This varies from pearl to pearl depending on the thickness and tightness of the layers of nacre that surround the pearl.

Hand-selected for their natural beauty and individual character, our pearls are among the rarest and most exquisite of nature’s treasures. Just like you, every pearl is unique and adds a touch of elegance to any outfit.
